31 Days with My Brother: A Timely Word (Part 1)

Welcome to Day #8 in the series on my brother.  Today is probably one of my favorite things to share with people about my brother…the uncanny way he is in tune with the Lord and often knows just the right thing to say.

Merriam-Webster defines uncanny as “seeming to have a supernatural character or origin and being beyond what is normal or expected…”

My brother seems to have a special connection with the Lord (as do many others that I have met with special needs).

Brian
has sat through many a sermon.  He usually thumbs through his Bible or
the hymnal during the sermons. As songs are sung and messages are given, he often finds
and points to verses and songs that complement what is being communicated.
I am
not sure if he still does this, but, at one point, Brian had much of the page numbers memorized in the hymnal. During one particular church service (where they had
the hymnal songs and numbers displayed), Brian told my parents that one
of the page numbers was incorrect, “Uh uh 235 not 247.”  Sure enough
when my parents turned to the song he indicated, he was right.  I think
they let someone know and they changed it.
We used to quiz him on this.  “Hey Brian, tell us the page number for Blessed Assurance?”  Sometimes he would say it right away and other times he’d act like he didn’t know or remember, but later would say, “Uh… one one eight”.

One Sunday the pastor was going on and on about the gory details of Jesus’ crucifixion.  My brother turned his Bible to 1 Peter 3:18  and showed my mom this verse, “Jesus died once for all…”  In one simple verse he summarized what the pastor was trying to say with many words and details.

Probably my favorite example of this is when my dad stayed home sick from church one Sunday.  He was achy and chilled.  As my mom and Brian were driving to church Brian said, “I Kings 1:1“.  When my mom looked up this verse it said,

“When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him.”

She continued reading and when she came to verse 2 she wondered if she should go home!

“So
his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve
the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord
the king may keep warm.”
One Easter season our youth group put on an Easter performance.  At one point we waved palm branches in the aisles of the sanctuary to reenact Palm Sunday.  Our director instructed us to shout some key phrases during this portion, like, “Hosanna” and “Praise the Lord.”  Brian, knowing the Bible well, decided to use the actual text, so he shouted, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest” (as found in Matthew 21:9).

Deep Breaths:  Do you read God’s Word?  With the Lord’s help I have come to love His Word and really enjoy studying it.  If you are not reading it,  would you consider opening it today?  If you don’t have a bible there are many apps and sites online where you can read it.  If you have one, what are you reading?  What is God teaching you through His Word?

Hebrews 4:12-13
“For
the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing
in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and
laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
