31 Days with My Brother: Music Sweet Music

Lights, camera, action…break a leg…ham it up…jazz hands….a cheesy smile; choir and musicals on Day #25.

It was such a blessing for Brian to be in choir throughout middle school and high school.  As mentioned before Brian doesn’t sing on key too much, but he has a lot of heart and passion about singing.  Hats off to our choir director for his willingness to have Brian be a part of choir; it enriched his educational experience in many ways.

My mom said she got a kick out of watching Brian sing Coney Island Baby with a guys ensemble during a choir concert; and also watching him sing in Latin on another piece.  Each year the choir sings Battle Hymn of the Republic to close out the Collage Concert.  At the end of this song a cannon goes off, for dramatic effect, so Brian would sing and plug one ear in preparation for the “boom”.

Like us, Brian loves musicals.  He watches certain musicals for different occasions.  When feeling patriotic, or around the 4th of July, out comes 1776.  Speaking of patriotism, he is pretty fascinated by the presidents, so Annie is another favorite (with FDR’s character in it).

Brian had the awesome opportunity to play a small part in two musicals during his high school career.  He was in the mission band for Guys and Dolls (Writing Sis was one of the leads in this one, Sarah Brown, and had her first kiss on stage with her male counterpart; she was less than thrilled about the smooch).

Our choir director was very gracious in giving Brian and one of his classmates (who was also in choir) the role of guards in Once Upon A Mattress.  I don’t think the script called for guards, but he created these parts just for them.  As the performances went on, one of the guards (my brother) starting appearing in more and more scenes.  I think he was only supposed to be in a few, but he wanted to be on stage more (hmmm, where does he get that from)?  During one of the performances he was found still guarding the castle after the curtain had closed.

Before each musical performance the cast did a spirit circle, to get pumped up for the show.  Brian led these.  They all began squatting down and then start chanting ,”energy, energy, energy, energy, ENERGY” (getting higher and louder as they went)!  Even after Brian graduated from high school they invited him back to lead the spirit circle.

Deep Breaths:  Music is such a sweet gift from God…how has He used music to enrich your life?  How can you use music today to give Him the praise and worship that He deserves?

1 Chronicles 16:8-11

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations what he has done.

Sing to him, sing praise to him;
    tell of all his wonderful acts.
Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face always.”
